The New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway’s tolls are set to increase on Jan. 1 — affecting more than 1 million drivers daily.

Department of Transportation Commissioner Diane Guttierrez-Scaccetti announced the impending hike during a Senate Budget Committing hearing Tuesday.

Guttierrez-Scaccetti did not specify the increase but said the state would raise tolls using the “indexing” system, which uses economic factors such as inflation to calculate increases while capping annual hikes at 3%.

At 3%, a ride from the northernmost exit on the turnpike to the southernmost exit would cost $20.65 for riders paying cash — or 60 cents more than current prices.

If that roundtrip were to be made five days a week, it would cost drivers an additional $312 next year compared to what it would cost this year.

New Jersey Turnpike and parkway tolls increased by 3% at the beginning of January 2023 and 2022 — the year the indexing system was adopted.

The New Jersey Turnpike hauled in over $252 million in revenue for the state last year and nearly $60 million throughout the first three months of 2023, according to state data.

Meanwhile, the Garden State Parkway raked in more than $360 million for the state last year and over $83 million throughout January, February, and March of this year.
