New details have surfaced in the shocking death of actor Gene Hackman and his wife, pianist Betsy Arakawa.

The two-time Oscar winning actor, his wife and their dog were found dead in their Sante Fe, New Mexico, home Wednesday (Feb. 26). According to a new report from the Associated Press, Hackman, Arakawa and their dog were all found dead in different rooms of the house. It notes the deceased had been “dead for some time” by the time they were discovered.

The report points to the Santa Fe County search warrant, which notes Hackman was found in the mudroom, while Arakawa was found dead in the bathroom near an “open prescription bottle and pills scattered on a countertop.” TMZ reports Arakawa was already in a state of decomposition when she was found, “with bloating in her face and mummification in her hands and feet,” leading authorities to believe it had been “some time” since the couple initially died.

Per TMZ, the bodies were discovered when two maintenance workers visited visited Hackman’s home after they hadn’t seen the couple in almost two weeks. A neighbor had also asked police to carry out a welfare check. According to the search warrant, the front door to the house was open when the maintenance workers arrived but there were no signs of forced entry.

Two healthy dogs were also found on the premises; one outside of the home and one inside.

The search warrant notes the “circumstances surrounding” their deaths were “suspicious enough in nature to require a thorough search and investigation,” per ABC News.

Further investigation found no wounds or evidence that they had been shot. The New Mexico Gas Company is complying with the investigation but found “no signs or evidence indicating there were any problems associated to the pipes in and around the residence,” per ABC.

However, the AP notes that “people exposed to gas leaks or carbon monoxide may not show signs of poisoning.”

A statement from the county sheriff’s office also notes, “Foul play is not suspected as a factor in those deaths at this time.”

Hackman led a prolific career in film, nabbing two Academy Awards for his performances in the 1972 film The French Connection and 1993’s Unforgiven.

Hackman was 95 at the time of death. His wife was 64.
