NextImg:Nets vs. Hawks prediction: NBA odds, picks, bets for Wednesday

The Brooklyn Nets don’t have the star power they had over the past few seasons, but they have proven to be very competitive under Jacque Vaughn, even as the new head coach has been to juggle his lineup on a nightly basis.

On Wednesday night in Atlanta, they’ll be without seven – yes, seven! – players because of injuries, including two key starters (Ben Simmons and Cam Thomas) and their backup point guard (Dennis Smith Jr.).

This isn’t anything new for Vaughn, who has been without Simmons for the last six games and Thomas for the past five.

Simmons (nerve impingement) appeared to be having a resurgent season after a disappointing start to his career, and Thomas was leading the team in scoring before spraining his ankle.

Through it all, though, Vaughn has kept the Nets competitive.

They have won three of the six games since Simmons went down, but two of the losses were by double digits – to Boston on Nov. 10 and Philadelphia last Sunday.

Furthermore, the Nets own the third-best record against the spread through the first month-plus with a 9-3 mark.

Only Orlando and Oklahoma City (both 11-3) are better.

Brooklyn began the season with three wins in its first four road games, but the Nets have dropped their last two away from Barclays Center – at Boston and Miami.

The Hawks will be playing with no rest after getting in a track meet with Indiana Tuesday night.

The Pacers outlasted Atlanta, 157-152, the highest game total in the NBA since at least 1995.

Needless to say, Atlanta has defensive issues (25th in both points allowed per game and defensive rating).

Not surprisingly, the Hawks are 9-4 on the over this season, tied for the sixth-best mark in the NBA, and have allowed at least 116 points in eight of their 13 games.

With the Nets coming in with a boatload of injuries, they’ll need someone to step up on the road.

And with the Hawks’ defense being a sieve this season, I’ll take Lonnie Walker IV, who has hit the points over in 10 of his last 11 games.

When the line is released, smash his point total.

Pick: Lonnie Walker IV over points
