Everyone’s favorite claymation comedy duo, Wallace & Gromit, are back in Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, a new feature-length movie now streaming on Netflix. And original creator Nick Park—who co-directed with Merlin Crossingham—made sure to include a bunch of Wallace & Gromit Easter Eggs, for fans who have been following the duo’s adventures for over three decades.
Wallace (voiced by Ben Whitehead), is a bumbling British inventor, who lives with his silent-but-expressive dog, Gromit. In this new movie, they face an old enemy: Feathers McGraw, the evil penguin who used Wallace to steal a rare blue diamond in the 1993 short, The Wrong Trousers. But in addition to all the nods to that short, there’s also a delightful reference to the very first Wallace & Gromit short, aka 1989’s A Grand Day Out, in which Wallace decides to make a grocery run to the moon when he discovers he is out of cheese. Because, as everyone knows, the moon is made of cheese!
That simple, silly premise set the tone for a whole series of silly adventures. So it’s only right that the latest silly adventure pay some frommage homage to the OG.

Here’s how it goes down: Feathers McGraw, now imprisoned in the local zoo, is determined to corrupt Wallace’s latest hair-brained an invention, a garden gnome robot. But before Feathers can hack into the computer system, he must answer a captcha question. The task? To select all the images that picture cheese. And one of the presented photos is none other than the moon.

Feathers quickly selects the first two images of cheese, but hovers over a photo of the moon, unsure. Because, well… is the moon made of cheese?

If you’ve seen A Grand Day Out, you know there is only one choice. Ultimately, Feathers does select the moon as cheese. This is, of course, the correct answer. And he’s in!
It’s a delightful, modern spin on an old gag, and it’s arguable the best joke in the movie. Cheese, Gromit!
