Did you know that Netflix has a catalog of secret codes to help you pick your next big watch? While big streaming fans have long been aware of Netflix’s secret codes, the streaming giant recently opened up about where they originated and how they continue to update them. 

According to Tudum, Netflix’s companion site, the genre tree is leftover from when Netflix was a DVDs-only site.

Featured on the secret menu is a detailed sorting of its large catalog with labels such as: Satanic Stories, Supernatural Soaps, K-Drama for Beginners and more. The list is comprised of roughly 36,000 categories. 

Michael Raphan, a curation strategist at Netflix, told Tudum that conversations and social trends often influence the streamer to create new collections.

Raphan stated that a conversation about the new Netflix spy series The Recruit prompted the team to create the collection Action With a Side of Romance.

Other examples include new collections being introduced around holidays, social events (Human Connections was created during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic) and viral conversations, such as when Pete Davidson performed a rap on Saturday Night Live called “Short-Ass Movies“; Netflix responded by creating a collection with the same name.

There are multiple ways to access Netflix’s secret menu, however, the most reliable method is to use your web browser as it has been reported that some of the codes don’t work on the app. From the browser, you can select a movie and type in the title via the app to watch on a bigger screen.

To access the secret menu item using the Netflix app, type the code into the search icon. A list of secret codes are provided on the Tudum website and various secret code catalogs.
