Hello again, friend of a friend. Scott Pilgrim is back! Netflix announced today that its new Scott Pilgrim anime series is bringing back the cast of the 2010 cult movie, including Chris Evans, Brie Larson and Anna Kendrick, all of whom gained wider recognition through future projects.

The series also brings back movie director, co-writer, and producer Edgar Wright as an executive producer.

Bryan Lee O’Malley, the author and artist behind the Scott Pilgrim graphic novel, will serve as an executive producer, writer and showrunner, alongside BenDavid Grabinski.

“We’re getting the band back together!” wrote O’Malley and Grabinski in a statement shared in a Thursday Netflix press release. “We couldn’t ask for a better team for this adventure.”

Wright added, “One of the proudest and most enjoyable achievements of my career was assembling and working with the dynamite cast of Scott Pilgrim.”

He continued, “Since the film’s release in 2010 we’ve done Q&As, remembrances and charity read throughs, but there was never the occasion to reunite the whole gang on an actual project. Until now…”

Wright said, “Original creator Bryan Lee O’Malley, along with writer BenDavid Grabinski have conjured up an anime series of Scott Pilgrim that doesn’t just expand the universe, but also…well, just watch it. I’m more than happy to announce that I have helped coax the entire original cast back to voice their characters on this epic new adventure. You are in for a treat.”

Michael Cera is returning to reprise the titular role, alongside Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Ramona Flowers, Satya Bhabha as Matthew Patel, Kieran Culkin as Wallace Wells, Evans as Lucas Lee, Kendrick as Stacey Pilgrim, Larson as Envy Adams, Alison Pill as Kim Pine, Aubrey Plaza as Julie Powers, Brandon Routh as Todd Ingram, Jason Schwartzman as Gideon Graves, Johnny Simmons as young Neil, Mark Webber as Stephen Stills, Mae Whitman as Roxie and Ellen Wong as Knives Chau.

Abel Gongora from animation studio Science SARU will direct and Marc Platt, Jared LeBoff, Adam Siegel, Michael Bacall, Nira Park and Eunyoung Choi join Wright as executive producers.

Scott Pilgrim follows an unambitious, loser musician who finds himself simultaneously competing in a Battle of the Bands competition while also fighting the seven evil exes of his new girlfriend.

The original graphic novels were released from 2004 to 2010 and quickly garnered critical acclaim. The novels were followed by the aforementioned movie adaptation and a video game adaptation – both of which were well-received. The movie, however, has since been revisited and criticized for its use of the manic pixie dream girl trope and under-development of female characters.

In an interview with Tudum, O’Malley teased what fans should expect of the new series, saying, “Everyone is putting their heart and soul into this thing and we’re having the most fun making it. It’s hilarious. It’s emotional. It’s visually stunning. The action scenes will blow your mind. And there might be a few surprises along the way.”

The original movie cast reunited in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic for a 10th anniversary virtual table read that doubled as a fundraiser for Water for People, a nonprofit bringing clean water to communities all around the world.

The plot and release date for the upcoming Netflix anime has yet to be disclosed, however you can watch the cast announcement teaser in the video above.
