A new trailer from Netflix teases the sordid details behind one of the most popular websites in the world: Pornhub.
Money Shot: The Pornhub Story is a new documentary featuring interviews with activists, industry experts, and former Pornhub employees about the trafficking accusations made against the site. According to the Netflix press site, the documentary attempts to tackle both sides of a moral quandary: “As anti-trafficking organizations seek justice for victims, can the online giant protect those from whom they profit, or is this a new wave of censorship for adult performers making consensual porn?”
The trailer shows a string of adult performers talking about working in the industry and how much it has changed since new laws have caused many to get deplatformed, affecting their ability to make money. One performer featured in the trailer claims, “They neglect to see that sex work and sex trafficking are two completely different things.”
Pornhub’s parent company, MindGeek, has been sued multiple times over the last few years for allowing videos depicting sexual assault and child pornography to be hosted and monetized on the site. One interview subject seen in the trailer says they “found too many cases of kids whose worst moments were preserved in amber.”
The documentary seems to be attempting to bridge the gap between the lives of adult performers who consent to being featured on the website as part of their work and the activists who are pushing for stronger rules to protect victims of sex trafficking. In this fight for justice, will performers continue to “get left in the dust,” as one source claims?
