Few things grab an audience’s attention like a celebrity trial, and few celebrity court cases dominated the culture the way that Johnny Depp and Amber Heard‘s did in 2022. Now there’s a Netflix docuseries — Depp v Heard — determined to unpack how the courtroom battle heralded a major change in not only the way we interact with celebrities, but also how we interact with the truth. In the trailer, revealed exclusively here at Decider, we can clearly see the imprint left in our culture by this trial’s vice grip.

Coming from documentary filmmaker Emma Cooper (The Mystery of Marilyn Monroe: The Unheard Tapes), Depp v Heard is a three-part deep dive into what was dubbed the first “trial by TikTok.” Each episode peels back another layer of what became a must-watch event with over 200 hours of live-streamed trial footage seen by millions.

The series analyzes the highly profitable industry that popped up around the trial, which included TikTokkers, YouTubers, weekend pundits, amateur sleuths, tons of bots, and at least one guy in a Deadpool mask. Depp v Heard examines how these people (and robots) manipulated the truth and influenced public perception — which honestly feels like a kind of harbinger of the nightmarish A.I.-driven future it seems like we’re all suddenly headed for! As for Depp v Heard, it’s heading for a Netflix debut on August 16.

Netflix’s official synopsis reads: “Depp v Heard is a three-part series examining the infamous defamation case that captured the world’s attention and became the world’s first trial by TikTok. Showing both testimonies side-by-side for the first time, this series explores this global media event, questioning the nature of truth and the role it plays in our modern society.”

Depp v Heard is directed by Emma Cooper and produced by Bitachon365 and Empress Films. The 3-part docuseries premieres on Netflix on August 16.
