Netflix has debuted the official teaser for its forthcoming reality series Squid Game: The Challenge.
Inspired by the Korean survival drama created by Hwang Dong-hyuk, the competition show will see 456 contestants from around the world compete in various challenges that have been seen in the original show, except nobody will be killed.
The winner will take home a staggering $4.56 million cash prize, the largest in reality television history according to the trailer, which you can watch above.
A synopsis reads: “Though the reality version of Squid Game isn’t a matter of life or death, there’s still a lot on the line. 456 players will compete to win $4.56million, the largest cash prize in reality television history.
“Through a series of games, each player will be pushed to their limits and forced to ask themselves just how far they’ll go to win, with opportunistic alliances, cutthroat strategies and timely betrayals to follow.”
As shown in the trailer, the animatronic girl doll returns for a game of Red Light, Green Light, while another game appears to resemble the elevated glass bridge challenge.
Squid Game: The Challenge will premiere on November 22, 2023 on Netflix.
The competition series had been criticized after reports of “serious injury” and neglect, with contestants reportedly saying the show was “the cruelest, meanest thing” and threatening to sue. Netflix denied these allegations.
Following the global success of the original Squid Game, the streamer officially announced in June of 2022 that a second season of was in development. At the time, Season 1 had became the most-viewed original title in Netflix history within 12 days of its release.
Show creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has teased details of what to expect in the second season, including the return of The Front Man and the introduction of Young-hee’s boyfriend.
