It’s no secret that Anthony Volpe’s first few months in the big leagues haven’t been the smoothest ride — and his teammates know it too.
Yankees pitcher Nestor Cortes, a rabid baseball card collector, recently got his hands on a 1-of-1 Topps Elements of Excellence Super Auto Volpe rookie card, according to The Athletic.
When he was told it could be a valuable commodity someday, Cortes nodded but acknowledged the rookie has a ways to go.
“He’s gotta produce,” Cortes said, according to The Athletic.
Cortes was evaluating the rookie through his first three big league months, where he’s batting .195/.275/.362 with 10 home runs over 287 plate appearances.
Though Volpe has failed to find consistent success with the bat, he’s added value on the base paths for the Yankees, stealing 15 bags, which is tied for fourth in baseball among shortstops.
But Volpe, who earned the starting shortstop job after a red-hot spring training, has made some improvements lately after shifting his batting stance off a recommendation from former teammate Austin Wells.
Over his last 11 games, he has a .378 on-base percentage and a .862 OPS, though he continues to strike out at a 31 percent clip.
But Volpe’s overall inconsistencies at the plate this season have been exacerbated during a time when the Yankees’ offense as a whole is underperforming.
The team is 19th in the majors in runs scored and continues to scuffle without superstar outfielder Aaron Judge, who is on the injured list with a toe issue that still has no clear timetable for a return.

Meanwhile, on the mound, Cortes has also failed to live up to expectations for the Yankees this year.
The 28-year-old lefty, who was a revelation last year with a 2.44 ERA over 158.1 innings, has a 5.16 ERA though 11 starts in 2023.
Making matters worse, Cortes landed on the 15-day injured list on June 8 — retroactive to June 5 — with a rotator cuff strain.
