A single dad was planning to pick up a salad at his Nebraska grocery store last month and ended up leaving with a $1 million Mega Millions ticket.
Brant Edgington had stopped at a Baker’s grocery store in Fremont to pick up his lunch for the following day when he decided at the last minute to put a few bucks down for the March 22 drawing, Nebraska Lottery said this week.
“I don’t play all that often,” Edgington said in a statement announcing his win. “As a single parent, baloney is more important, financially.”
Despite his dad and grandfather being avid Mega Millions and Powerball players, Edgington said he only plays when the jackpot gets high — and wasn’t expecting to buy a ticket during his pit stop.
It wasn’t until the following week, though, that the father remembered to look at his tickets.
When he returned to the store, Edgington said he had to get a clerk to help him after running into issues using the Check-a-Ticket scanner.
“They disappeared for a minute,” he said.

“Then a different lady came up with her and they just stared at me. She told me, ‘Don’t pass out when I tell you this.’”
One of his tickets matched all five winning numbers — 3, 8, 31, 35, 44 — but not the Mega Ball (16).
Edgington, who claimed his prize last Friday, said he is unsure if he will continue playing the lottery now after his spur-of-the-moment win.
The odds of winning $1 million playing Mega Millions are 1 in 12,607,306, the state’s lottery officials said. Meanwhile, the overall odds of winning any prize are 1 in 24.
