There are angels all around us.
At least that’s what about seven in 10 Americans believe, according to a new poll by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.
Pollsters found that 69% of people across the nation think that angels are real, while the same number also believe in heaven and 72% believe in the power of prayer.
The Almighty is still all-powerful, with 79% of Americans believing in God or a higher power, and 63% thinking karma is real.
“People are yearning for something greater than themselves — beyond their own understanding,” said Jack Grogger, a chaplain for the Los Angeles Angels and Anaheim Ducks.
The devil, meanwhile, may work hard, but only 56% of people actually think Satan exists. Even fewer believe in astrology or reincarnation (34% each) or that spiritual energies can be rooted in things like plants, rivers or crystals (42%).
Susan Garrett, an angel expert and New Testament professor at Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Kentucky, noted that what people understand as angels can be “malleable.”
“You can have any one of a number of quite different worldviews in terms of your understanding of how the cosmos is arranged, whether there’s spirit beings, whether there’s life after death, whether there’s a God … and still find a place for angels in that worldview.”
The survey polled 1,680 adults from May 11 to May 15, with a sampling error of 3.4%
