NextImg:NBA stars sound ready for Saudi-backed basketball after Kylian Mbappe’s $776 million Al Hilal offer

Don’t expect a Rory Mcllroy-esque stand from LeBron James and other fellow NBA stars if and when the Saudi Arabian money comes knocking.

Upon reports of the Saudi Arabian soccer club Al Hilal offering slightly north of $776 million for one year of PSG forward Kylian Mbappe; James was joined by Damian Lillard, Draymond Green, and Giannis Antetokounmpo, who were shocked by the money being offered.

Lillard tweeted his reaction to the contract offer, writing “1 year 776mm? Wtf lol …”

A few hours later, James would tweet his own GIF of Forrest Gump running with the caption, “Me headed to Saudi when they call @RichPaul4 & @mavcarter for that 1 year deal!”

Antetokounmpo also wanted in the on action.

“Al Hilal you can take me. I look like Kylian Mbappe,” he said, alongside a close-up photo.

Recently re-signed Warriors forward Draymond Green also tweeted, “They got basketball leagues too, right? I don’t [think] the ink on my contract has dried up yet.”

The Saudis do have a basketball league known as the Saudi Basketball League (SBL).

Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf is the most noteworthy player to ever compete in the league when he joined in 2007.

Saudi Arabia has successfully infiltrated the sports world, including with LIV Golf, where they poached multiple top golfers from the PGA Tour.

The results were as good as they could’ve hoped for, with LIV and PGA agreeing to merge pending approval, reunifying golf and bringing Saudi Arabian oil money into the fold.

Their Private Investment Fund (PIF) also helped purchase Newcastle United, a Premier League soccer team.

PIF was also heavily involved in bringing Cristian Ronaldo to Al Nassr in January and offering Lionel Messi $400 million to join Al Hilal.

Messi would go on to reject the offer and join MLS, but the emergence of Saudi Arabian oil money in sports is impossible to ignore.

Saudi Arabia is also expected to be heavily involved in the bid for the 2030 World Cup, with their primary goal being to diversify funds and become less reliant on oil.

It is entirely unclear whether the PIF will ever enter basketball or American football, but many have speculated that this is a true elephant in the room.

And it seems like the NBA players wouldn’t say no.
