NextImg:My ‘objection’ joke ruined my best friend’s wedding — should they forgive me?

A rude wedding guest’s decision to speak now instead of holding his peace turned the lovebirds’ dream nuptials into a nightmare.

The groom’s best friend detailed his outrageous “objection” joke that nearly tanked the couple’s happy day, as documented in a viral Reddit thread.

“Recently I attended my best friend’s wedding,” the anonymous author wrote in the ridiculously popular “AmITheA–hole” forum. “We met as we used to play Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter together online and found out we lived in the same state,” the wannabe funny guy continued. “He had an obsession with [the game character] Mileena, and I always teased him that he would rather get with her instead of his long-time girlfriend – now wife.”

During the ceremony, when the priest dropped the traditional “speak now or forever hold your peace” line, asking for any objections from the wedding party, the prankster turned to another friend and snarked that “the groom would still have time for Mileena.”

Unfortunately, the groom’s goofy pal caught the attention of the bride’s mom, who “started shouting asking who Mileena was” and accused her soon-to-be son-in-law, who she had always supposedly disliked, of cheating.

On Reddit, it seemed that the resounding verdict was yes, the friend in question was “the a–hole.”

“Naturally I was mortified, and the groom was as well, especially when it seemed like the priest would stop the wedding,” the sorta ashamed writer said in the since-deleted post that’s still generating comments from supporters and haters. “This led to the most embarrassing moment in my life, where I had to go up there and explain to the priest using my phone what I had joked about, and how she was a fictional character.”

Now, his best friend, the groom, won’t speak to him — and the wife flat out hates him. Yet, he isn’t sure he’s fully to blame.

“I did explain to the priest what was going on in order to make sure the wedding could go ahead and some part of me believes that if the bride’s mother didn’t eavesdrop, we wouldn’t have even had a problem in the first place,” he said, posing the question, “AITA [am I the a–hole]?”

Mileena from Mortal Kombat

During the ceremony, the friend joked whether the groom would still have time in his life for Mileena, a fictional character from the video game Mortal Kombat.

Opinionated social media justice warriors in the comments section debated both sides, some agreeing that the friend was, in fact, the a–hole, while others blamed the mother-in-law.

“I would say NTA [not the a–hole],” one person said, jumping to his defense.

“You didn’t announce the joke to the whole wedding, only kept it between you and your friend and someone overheard.”

“NTA,” agreed another. “Whispering jokes during ceremonies happens all the time. It’s normal. Not normal is taking something you overheard in a whisper out of context and screaming about it at a wedding.”

“Wow. You really ruined a whole wedding for something so bulls–t,” one bridal loyalist chided. “YTA [you’re the a-hole], hard to think anyone could be so thoughtless to do this without it being a deliberate sabotage.”

Happy couple with jealous mother in law

While the Redditor partially blamed the bride’s mother for her inflammatory remarks about cheating, Redditors labeled the original poster as the instigator.

“YTA objecting at a wedding is serious thing and valid reason to refuse to marry the couple that day. It’s as bad as bomb jokes at the airport,” someone else commented.

“YTA. Dude you made your in joke at the most inappropriate time and place,” one person chimed in. “You could have saved it for when none of the other guests would hear it but instead you did this during the middle of your friends wedding. Not cool.”

The heated comments seemed to result in the original post’s removal, although it remains immortalized by a Reddit moderator bot.

The “AITA” subreddit has sparked raucous debate in the past, especially in regards to weddings.

One bridesmaid was dubbed “selfish” and “toxic” by Redditors after revealing that she accused her bestie, the bride, of prioritizing her hubby over their friendship.

Meanwhile, a former bridesmaid who had been cut from her brother’s wedding after investing “thousands” in the role between outings, arrangements and the costly dress. When the bride decided to not include the Redditor in her wedding, the woman booked a trip to Miami the week of the nuptials — and fellow users rallied around her decision.
