A murder suspect was killed and a New York State trooper was wounded in a shootout on Interstate 87 in Rockland County on Wednesday afternoon, police said.
Troopers on the highway near the town of Ramapo pulled over a vehicle that was connected to a homicide around 2:55 p.m., according to state police.
During the stop, the suspect — who was the sole occupant of the vehicle — began shooting at two troopers, authorities said.
The cops returned fire and struck the suspect, killing him, police said.
One trooper suffered a minor injury and the other was unharmed.
Police said there is no threat to the public.
Due to the police investigation, the southbound side of I-87 south of exit 15b near the New Jersey border was shut down, causing delays.
Additional information on the shooting was not immediately available.
Nearby resident George Caccamo said he was shocked when he heard the gunshots ring out.
“I was sitting in the house. I was watching TV. Next thing I know, I heard a big bang and I figured, okay, it’s one of the truckers, probably another blow out,” he told CBS New York. “I never imagined something like this.”
