NextImg:Most NY voters oppose housing migrants in SUNY dorms, don’t like Adams’ relocation plans: poll

A majority of New York State voters oppose temporarily housing migrants in dorms on State University of New York campuses, according to the latest poll by Siena College.

The poll, released on Wednesday, found 54% of voters opposed to the idea, while 33% supported it.

Even Democrats were split, with 41% party respondents in favor and 41% opposed.

Republicans and self-described independents were overwhelmingly opposed, 77% and 55% respectively.

“Voters oppose using SUNY dorms to temporarily house new migrants to New York by a 21-point margin. It’s opposed by more than three-quarters of Republicans and a majority of independents, while Democrats are evenly divided,” said Siena College pollster Steven Greenberg.

The survey also revealed that 46% of voters oppose Mayor Adams’ to relocate migrants to communities outside NYC in the burbs’ or upstate, while just 40% were in favor.

New Yorkers split along geographic lines: 51% of New York City voters back Adams while 52% of upstate and 52% of suburban voters oppose the move.

“A majority of Democrats and New York City voters support it, however, it’s opposed by Republicans, independents, downstate suburbanites and upstaters,” Greenberg said.

Adams has faced lawsuits from not-in-my-backyard politicians who argue they’re not sanctuary jurisdictions and they don’t have the resources to handle an influx, even while New York City is footing the bill to provide the temporary services.

The Big Apple is housing migrants in 175 emergency shelters across the city, including hotels and massive temporary shelters.

“With over 50,000 asylum seekers currently in our care and a total of over 81,200 asking us for care since last spring, New York City continues to do more than any other city or level of government to address this national crisis,” Adams said Tuesday.

The Siena College survey queried 817 registered voters from June 20–25. It has an overall margin of error of plus or minus  3.9 percentage points.
