It takes a lot to shock Andy Cohen. But on Monday night’s (Feb. 24) episode of Watch What Happens Live, he was left absolutely stunned after actor Morris Chestnut revealed his first celebrity crush was Penny Marshall‘s Laverne DeFazio from Laverne & Shirley.
During a game of “Pillow Talk,” fans learned that Chestnut enjoys cuddling when his favorite sports team wins and that the last movie that made him cry was La Bamba. But his most surprising answer came when Cohen asked him to name his first celebrity crush.
“That’s a good one,” Chestnut said with a giggle, before admitting, “My first celebrity crush was probably Laverne from Laverne & Shirley.“
A shocked Cohen asked, “You’re telling me Laverne DeFazio?”
Chestnut reminded Cohen that Laverne was “kissing guys and stuff” in the 1970s sitcom, to which the Bravo icon replied, “Laverne was, as they would say at the time, ‘easy.’ So, you felt like you had a green light. Wow. TV’s Penny Marshall.”
Cohen, of course, wasn’t going to let Chestnut live his confession down. After the actor said the secret to his 30-year marriage was “luck,” Cohen playfully added, “With a little Laverne DeFazio role-play.”
Even Jon Hamm, who also paid a visit to the Bravo Clubhouse on Monday night, couldn’t believe his ears.
“Some fascinating pop culture touch points!” Cohen exclaimed when they finished the segment, while Hamm joked, “Did not expect La Bamba. Did not expect Laverne.”
Cohen said he’s asked “hundreds of people” that same question and none of them named the iconic character, quipping, “Laverne in the spank bank!”
The Real Housewives executive producer made one more joke at the end of the episode when Chestnut credited musician Luther Vandross for getting him through “a lot of high school dates.”
“Yes. When you were thinking of Laverne DeFazio,” Cohen jokingly said. “By the way, every time I see you for the rest of time, I will be thinking of Laverne DeFazio.”
Watch What Happens Live airs Sunday through Thursday at 10 p.m. ET on Bravo. New episodes are available to stream the next day on Peacock.
