NextImg:Montez Sweat and Bears agree to four-year, $98M deal after Commanders trade

Before breaking a sweat in a game for his new team, Montez Sweat got paid by the Bears.

The defensive end, who was acquired from the Commanders before Tuesday’s trade deadline, has agreed to a four-year contract extension worth $98 million in new money, including $72.9 million guaranteed, according to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport.

The 27-year-old Sweat was slated to be an unrestricted free agent after this season.

The Bears sent a 2024 second-round pick to Washington for Sweat, who has recorded 35.5 sacks over his first five NFL seasons, including 6.5 in eight games this years with the Commanders.

“I’m just happy to be here and ready to get to work,” Sweat said earlier this week in preparation for Sunday’s game against the Saints. “I think I’m a very strong, hard-working, tenacious player who just really wants to get better every day.

“I know I’ve still got a long way to go, but I’m happy to be the player I am.”

The Commanders also traded defensive end Chase Young to the 49ers before the deadline for a 2024 third-round pick.
