NextImg:MLB PrizePicks predictions, player picks Sept. 6: Max Scherzer, Logan Gilbert

Let’s not forget that baseball is in full swing!

We have a loaded slate of games for Wednesday.

Let’s dive in and find some action during the evening window.

Gilbert has had an up-and-down season.

But one thing for sure is that he has flashed massive strikeout upside from time to time this season.

The good news here is that we won’t need a ceiling game out of him to hit seven strikeouts against Cincinnati.

The ballpark downgrade is a bit worrisome, but there are so many holes in the Reds lineup that this number is difficult to ignore.

Gilbert might be onto something with his slider usage.

He’s throwing it 14% more of the time to lefties across the last 30 days (compared to the past year), and the RotoGrinders PlateIQ tool is showing a massive 41.5% CSW% with that pitch to lefties.

The Reds, who are projected to roll out five lefties against Gilbert, own the 3rd-highest strikeout rate vs. RHP since August 1st. Let’s get the good version of Gilbert tonight.

Adon is simply not a pro who is going to punch out bunches of batters.

He owns a 19% strikeout rate this season and that number has dipped to 15% across the last 30 days.

There’s no doubt the Mets had a disaster of a season, but there are still a few pesky batters in that lineup who are tough outs.

Dating back to the beginning of 2022, there are five hitters in the Mets lineup with strikeout rates better than 20.5%.

Adon and his stingy 5.8% walk rate will rarely walk any batter, so something has to give in this matchup – and I’m backing the Mets to make enough contact with the baseball on Wednesday night.

Strider’s strikeout rate is down just a tick across the past month, but he has mostly continued his strikeout dominance of the league.

The Atlanta ace has hit at least 9 strikeouts in 10 of his last 12 starts.

St. Louis isn’t atrocious against right-handed pitchers, but they rank 16th (right about league average) in K rate vs. right-handed pitchers since August 1st.

Strider leans on his slider as his out pitch, and according to PlateIQ, this Cards lineup has really struggled with making contact vs. right-handed sliders dating back to the beginning of 2022.

Max Scherzer

It seems like a low number for Scherzer at first glance, but Max had extremely favorable matchups during his last six starts.

Since August 1st, Scherzer has squared off with six teams who rank 13th or worst in strikeout rate vs. right-handed pitchers during that time span.

It’s noteworthy that Scherzer has struck out just 21% of right-handed hitters during that cupcake stretch of opponents, while the Astros project to deploy six right-handed batters against him on Wednesday night.
