Will Levis will begin training camp third on the Titans’ depth chart but he’ll have the opportunity to compete his way up the ranks.
Levis, 23, painfully slipped out of the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft, despite being projected in many mock drafts to go in the top five, and was finally selected by Tennessee with the second pick in the second round on Friday night.
Titans head coach Mike Vrabel spoke to reporters on Friday and explained that there will be a quarterback competition with Levis, veteran Ryan Tannehill and second-year pro Malik Willis.
“Ryan will be the starting quarterback on Monday,” Vrabel said, according to NFL.com. “Malik will be the backup. Will will be the third quarterback. And what I’ve told them is whatever happens after that will be up to the players. That’s what it’s always been here. That’s what we always want it to be.”
Vrabel spoke about the competition matter-of-factly.
“That’s our job is to bring in competition at every position,” Vrabel continued. “It’s not a secret. I hope that by now that everybody understands that we have to prove our value to this football team each and every day.”
After the draft slide, Levis, who played his junior and senior seasons at Kentucky, admitted in an interview on ABC that he has a “little bit” of a chip on his shoulder over the snub.
“I mean, a little bit, but I think that regardless of if I went first overall or in the second round, my work ethic wouldn’t have been changed,” Levis said, when asked about it by Robert Griffin III.
“Circumstances can’t change how you approach situations like that. But I’m happy for all the dudes that went in the first round, that was definitely something that I would’ve liked to happen, but I feel like I ended up where I was meant to be and I’m just looking forward to getting to work.”
The Titans went 7-10 last season and missed the playoffs.
