Mike Tyson appeared to get emotional when speaking to Tyson Fury’s father, John Fury, during a recent appearance on the “Boxing Arabia” podcast.
John, who named son Tyson after the heavyweight legend, spoke about his admiration for Tyson that began early on in his career, according to The Sun.
“I spent my whole life admiring him and I felt sorry for him at the same time when Cus died,” said John, referencing Tyson’s mentor, Cus D’Amato, who passed away in 1985.
“I got heavy-hearted. I got a lump in my throat. I thought, You know what? If he can come here and meet us, we could be his brothers, father could have been his father and looked after him for the man he is. Not for what people can get out of him.”
Tyson, 57, then looked at the cameras and said “Stop.”
John, whose 34-year-old son has held the WBC heavyweight title since 2020, then explained how he made watching Tyson a priority while struggling in his own life.
“I didn’t have any money, I had no electricity, no running water all I had was a petrol generator that you had to pull a string out to make it work,” John said.
“I used to get up at ten past three in the morning, start my generator, ready for this guy to rock and roll.”
John then elaborated on his son’s namesake, noting when Fury was born three months premature in 1988, he knew exactly what to name his then one-pound infant to give him strength when all odds were against his survival: Tyson.
“I looked at these doctors and I said, ‘hear these words. He’s not only going to live. He’s going to be seven feet tall, 20 stone and the next heavyweight champion of the world, and his name is Tyson,’” John said.
The 6-foot-9 Fury is now regarded as one of the world’s most premiere boxers.
Tyson and Fury are not only connected by name but by boxing legacy, as well.
