St. John’s is in the market for a new athletic director.

Mike Cragg is out after six years, the school announced on Monday afternoon. Cragg had two years remaining on his contract, but his departure was described by St. John’s as the two sides mutually agreeing to part ways.

He came to St. John’s in 2018 after serving as the deputy athletic director at Duke. He had been with the Blue Devils since 1987, starting in sports information. His final day in Queens will be June 30, 2024.

The school said it is launching a nationwide search for a replacement.

Fordham athletic director Ed Kull, a St. John’s alum who worked in its athletic department, is a candidate, according to sources. Kull is close with booster Mike Repole and is known to be a skilled fundraiser.

St. John’s is also considering an in-house hire, with well-liked deputy athletic director John Diffley a possibility, among others.

During his time at St. John’s, Cragg launched the UNLIMITED program to help offer name, image, and likeness resources to student-athletes, among other initiatives and achievements. He also represented St. John’s on NCAA and Big East committees and served as a member of the NCAA Division I Competition Oversight Committee.

“It has been an honor to lead the athletic department at St. John’s University,” Craigg said in a statement. “I am proud of what we have accomplished together and am confident that the department is in a strong position for continued success.

“As I bid farewell to St. John’s, I extend my gratitude to our passionate fans and loyal alumni whose support has been the bedrock of our community. I am profoundly thankful for the dedicated and incredible staff of administrators and coaches whose commitment has propelled us forward.”

Cragg was instrumental in helping navigate St. John’s during the challenging COVID pandemic and vital in St. John’s going to Nike as an apparel sponsor.
