


Michigan State’s Jeremy Fears Jr. was shot in his leg in while home in Illinois for the holiday break, the university announced Saturday afternoon.
The freshman guard suffered non-life-threatening injuries and underwent surgery, per the school.
The nature of the surgery was not clear.
“Jeremy underwent surgery this morning and is resting comfortably,” Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo said in a statement. “While there is much we still don’t know, my focus is on supporting Jeremy on his road to recovery.”
According to 1340 AM, the freshman was one of two people shot at 4 a.m. on Saturday in the Marycrest subdivision on the west side of Joliet.
According to ESPN, an officer from the Joliet Police Department said a public information officer was unavailable to discuss the incident because of the holiday.
Fears posted on his Instagram Story following the incident.
“Minor setback we gone be good appreciate yall,” he said with a heart emoji in a picture that appeared to be from a hospital bed.
In the 12 games for the Spartans (7-5) this season, the 6-foot-2 Fears has averaged 3.5 points, 3,3 assists and 1.9 rebounds in 15.3 minutes on the court per game.
He notched a career-high 10 assists in Michigan State’s 99-55 win over Stony Brook on Thursday.
This latest incident comes after Michigan State endured a mass shooting on campus in February that left three students dead and five injured.
