An unsung American hero has emerged in Flushing.
Unseeded Michael Mmoh upset No. 11 Karen Khachanov 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 in front of a rowdy crowd Tuesday on Court 12 in the first round of the U.S. Open.
In the final set, the first two games went into deuce with each taking one.
Khachanov attempted to play near the net to get in Mmoh’s face, but the 25-year-old kept dealing out powerful deep shots, meeting Khachanov at his feet or lagging behind.
Mmoh broke Khachanov’s serve in both the third game and seventh game, beating out Khachanov in the latter with six break points.

In the final game, Khachanov’s netted ball tied the bow for Mmoh’s sweet victory.
The American, who was born in Saudi Arabia, will play again tomorrow against either soon-to-be retired John Isner, a fellow American, or Argentina’s Facundo Diaz Acosta.
