A prospect in the 2023 NFL Draft was injured in a fatal car crash over the weekend “that has required multiple surgeries.”
Michael Jefferson, a wide receiver out of Louisiana-Lafayette, was involved in a head-on collision Sunday evening when a 55-year-old man behind the wheel of a 2014 Dodge Charger struck the athlete’s 2019 Chevrolet Impala on U.S. 43 in Mobile County, Alabama, the state’s law enforcement agency officials told TMZ Sports.
A third vehicle, a 2008 Nissan Maxima, then struck the Dodge Charger.
The individual driving the Dodge Charger was not wearing their seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.
Jefferson’s agent, Jon Perzley, told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Tuesday how his client “required multiple surgeries” following the incident.
The receiver suffered multiple breaks in one of his legs, The Advocate reported Tuesday.
Considered to be a mid-round pick in this month’s NFL draft, Jefferson began his collegiate career at Alabama State in 2018 before transferring to Louisiana in 2021.
He led the Ragin’ Cajuns in receiving last season, recording 51 catches for 810 yards and seven touchdowns.
Jefferson ran a 4.56 in the 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis earlier this year.
