Michael Che truly outdid himself during this year’s Saturday Night Live joke swap, forcing his “Weekend Update” co-host Colin Jost to crack an awkward joke about his wife Scarlett Johansson.
The SNL Season 49 finale aired on Saturday night (May 18), bringing back a yearly tradition for “The Weekend Update” in which Che and Jost write (typically offensive) jokes for one another that neither sees until they are on the air.
Che, for his part, invited an “actual, practicing Rabbi” to the desk, where Jost took jabs at the pro-Palestine protests — and even declared his support for convicted rapist Harvey Weinstein.
“Pro-Palestinian protesters walked out of Jerry Seinfeld’s commencement address at Duke University and I think that’s disgraceful. During these difficult times, it’s important to support our Jewish friends,” Jost read. “That’s why the only chant you’ll hear from me is ‘Free Weinstein.’ Keep fighting, Harvey.”
However, Jost was in for a real treat when Che tricked him into telling a joke about his actress wife.
“ChatGPT has released a new voice assistant feature inspired by Scarlett Johansson’s AI character in Her,” Jost said. “Which I’ve never bothered to watch, because without that body, what’s the point of listening?”
Jost visibly cringed at the dig before cracking a nervous laugh and putting his face into the palms of his hands.
Fortunately for the comedian, he was able to get his revenge. Not only did Che have to insinuate that he was a both pedophile and the mysterious man who’s been punching random women in New York City, but he also inserted himself into the feud between Kendrick Lamar and Drake.
“Speaking of bitches, I want to call out the biggest bitch of all, Kendrick Lamar. Or should I say littlest?” Che quipped. “Your war with Drake may be over, but your war with Michael Che is just beginning. So, to quote Hamilton, ‘Shoot your shot, playa.'”
He then turned to Jost and concluded, “That was pretty well done man,” adding, “I don’t like that one bit.”
