There was disappointment and there was uncertainty.
When the Giants dealt for former first-round pick Isaiah Simmons two weeks before the start of the season, Micah McFadden was unsure of what his role would be. How the newcomer would change things for him.
But the inside linebacker also didn’t let it distract him from the bigger picture.
“I mean, obviously, everybody wants to be on the field, and everybody wants to play, but at the same time, I think it’s a lot bigger than that,” McFadden said over Zoom on Monday. “It’s about the team and getting the best guys in the building so that we can win on Sunday.”
McFadden certainly was one of the best guys in last Thursday’s loss to the 49ers on the defensive side of the ball.
He was active getting into the backfield — producing 10 tackles, four for loss.
The rest of the team had just two.
Simmons didn’t make much of an impact, and really hasn’t so far as a Giant.
“The biggest difference, I would say, I felt like in both games, a lot of times I was in the right position, doing the right thing up until the ball,” McFadden said. “I’d say Week 2, I just probably could have finished a few more plays. Obviously, that comes down to tackling and getting the ball carrier on the ground when I have those opportunities, and I think there was a lot to improve too in Week 3. Still had some missed tackles against San Francisco, and that’s something to clean up moving forward.”
A fifth-round pick a year ago out of Indiana, McFadden enjoyed a productive rookie year — producing 59 tackles, including six for loss, two sacks and a forced fumble.
He was in a battle to be a starter this summer alongside Bobby Okereke.
Then, the Giants traded for Simmons.
But McFadden has hung on to his job so far.

However, he’s more focused on the shaky defense figuring things out after a shaky first three games.
“There is going to be competition in this league, and that’s on any team you play for,” McFadden said. “After meeting [Simmons] and having him in the room with us, becoming close with him, and playing with him on the field, I think Isaiah is a great fit for this team. I’ve been really excited to get to know him and obviously see him perform and do his thing on Sundays.”
