NextImg:Mets vs. Nationals prediction: Bet on plenty of runs

The Mets and Nationals get the Monday baseball slate going with a late afternoon tilt in Washington.

It’s a battle of lefties as the Mets’ David Peterson (1-5, 7.68 ERA) and Patrick Corbin (1-5, 4.87 ERA).

Both pitchers are off to rocky starts this season, especially Peterson.

The Mets’ lefty has allowed at least four runs in five of seven starts this year.

Things might not get better for Peterson on Monday.

The Nationals’ offense is far from intimidating but Washington has hit left-handers well this season.

Entering Sunday, the Nationals were hitting .286 and averaging over five runs per nine innings versus lefties, compared to .238 and 3.6 runs against right-handers.

Corbin’s record doesn’t look good, but he hasn’t been awful this year; the Nationals just don’t score many runs when he’s on the mound.

The veteran has pitched at least six innings five times this year and has allowed three runs or less in four straight outings.

However, the Nationals went 1-3 in those games because they averaged 2.4 runs.

Corbin has struggled against the Mets though, with current New York batters hitting .292 against him.

These are two of the worst offenses in the NL right now, but both should take advantage of the pitching matchups on Monday.

Look for the game to go over the modest total.

The play: Over 9 runs.
