NextImg:Mets’ Ronny Mauricio rips 117-mph rocket double in first MLB at-bat

As the Mets wind down a miserable 2023, they got a glimpse at the future beginning Friday, with Ronny Mauricio finally getting the call-up from the minors he waited for nearly all season.

The 22-year-old was brought up from Triple-A Syracuse prior to Friday’s game against the Mariners at Citi Field and was in the lineup at second base — the position he started playing this season in the minors.

But he’s made his name with his bat and prior to his MLB debut, Mauricio said through an interpreter he wanted to “go out there and put on a show.”

The switch hitter got off to a promising start, ripping a 117.3-mph double to right field from the left side to lead off the bottom of the third in his first at-bat.

It was the hardest-hit ball by a Met this season and the sixth hardest-hit ball in the majors all year.

He also caught the first ball hit in his direction, a routine popup by Dominic Canzone to end the top of the second and then started a 4-6-3 double play on a Mike Ford grounder an inning later.

“It’s really exciting,’’ Mauricio said. “This is where I wanted to be ever since I started playing baseball. It’s an incredible day.”
