NextImg:Mets open to trading catcher Omar Narvaez after Francisco Alvarez’s emergence

Omar Narvaez picked up his 2024 player option in November, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he will be a Met.

The Mets have indicated to teams they are open to trading Narvaez, The Post’s Mike Puma reported on Thursday, which would give the veteran catcher at least a chance to play more frequently than he would in Queens behind Francisco Alvarez.

Narvaez, who turns 32 next month, will be playing on a $7 million contract next season.

The Mets have Tomas Nido in the minor leagues, set to make $2.1 million in 2024, though he is not currently on the 40-man roster.

They also claimed catcher Tyler Heineman off waivers from the Blue Jays last month, giving him a spot on the 40-man roster.

The Mets signed Narvaez last offseason and he was their Opening Day catcher, but he landed on the injured list a week into the season with a calf strain that kept him out till June.

That opened the door for Alvarez to be promoted from Triple-A and take over the full-time job, earning 100 starts behind the plate to Narvaez’s 40 and Nido’s 18.

Narvaez indicated in July that he would be open to a trade if it meant receiving more playing time.

“I think every player wants to play every day,” Narvaez said. “It would be sad for me to leave the team, but if that would be a benefit on my career, I definitely would take it. Everybody on this club wants to play every day.”

In 49 games last season, Narvaez hit .211 with a .580 OPS.

Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns previously traded for Narvaez in 2019 when Stearns was in the same role for the Brewers.
