NextImg:Mets make sacrifice by optioning Luis Guillorme for Mark Vientos

The Mets are sacrificing defense and flexibility for power.

As they officially called up slugger Mark Vientos from Triple-A Syracuse on Wednesday, the Mets optioned Luis Guillorme, a fixture on the big-league club, to create roster space.

Guillorme, who had not been optioned to the minor leagues since July 2019, has not hit this season in 27 games (.590 OPS), but he has never been known for his bat.

Guillorme is a slick fielder who can move all around the infield and represented the only true backup to Francisco Lindor at shortstop.

In optioning the 28-year-old, the Mets avoided making a more difficult and more permanent move with another veteran.

If they were to cut bait with Eduardo Escobar, Daniel Vogelbach or Tommy Pham, who are all out of minor league options, they would have had to designate the roster casualty for assignment and likely lose him.

In choosing Guillorme, the Mets hung on to future flexibility but damaged their current roster flexibility.

With righty-hitting Vientos and lefty-hitting Vogelbach, manager Buck Showalter has two solid options at DH, but neither has a true position.

Vientos, who is batting eighth and playing third base Wednesday against the Rays, had been playing first and third base at Syracuse but has a poor defensive reputation.

Their backup shortstop right now is likely Escobar, who will become the backup everything around the infield.

The Mets, who have scored the eighth-fewest runs in MLB, clearly believed that Vientos’ bat — which had posted a 1.104 OPS with Syracuse — was worth it.
