NextImg:Mets’ Jeff McNeil lashes out at umpire: ‘Are you sh–ting me’

The fiery Jeff McNeil was not happy with a second-inning punch-out from umpire Adam Beck.

McNeil was headed toward first base after a 3-2 fastball from Tigers pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez appeared to miss the zone low, but it was instead called as the third strike by Beck.

“Are you sh–ting me?” McNeil screamed at the ump, expressing his thoughts on the call. “Are you sh–ting me?”

McNeil was right to be upset, though, as the pitch missed the plate low by at least two inches and halted a potential Mets rally.

He was not ejected as part of his angry tirade, but it continued a rough stretch for Beck.

Last week, the umpire ejected Brewers manager Craig Counsell and shortstop Willy Adames after they were upset he didn’t grant time to Adames and then called an automatic strike due to a pitch clock violation.

Jeff McNeil was halfway down the first baseline when he realized that the umpire called this pitch a strike.

Counsell was quickly ejected, followed by Adames after he struck out in the at-bat.

The Milwaukee infielder needed to be restrained by teammates after his ouster.

“Willy stepped out on that pitch and Adam (Beck) suggested that he didn’t call timeout. I kind of got that,” Counsell said.

McNeil didn’t meet the same ending for his objections to Beck’s call, though he finished the afternoon 0-for-3 as the Mets continued their scuffling with a 2-0 loss to the Tigers.

Rodriguez held the Mets to just two hits over eight innings, with reliever Alex Lange giving up just one more in the ninth as the Tigers swept the series.
