Daniel Vogelbach has been receiving a mental break of sorts.
In an attempt to get the struggling DH on track, Mets brass late last week decided to essentially play a man short for a stretch until Vogelbach can get his swing right, according to sources.
Vogelbach, 30, last played last Wednesday in Atlanta and wasn’t considered as a pinch-hitting option late, including in the Mets’ 7-6 loss to the Yankees on Tuesday.
Vogelbach owns a disappointing .203/.343/.297 slash line and has become a target of the fans at Citi Field lately.
The left-handed hitter has a .218/.363/.318 slash line against righties for the season, and over his last 17 games, he’s just 4-for-44 with eight walks, 16 strikeouts and one RBI.
After the Mets acquired Vogelbach in a trade with the Pirates last July, he hit .255 with a .393 on-base percentage and .436 slugging percentage in 55 games the rest of the season.
