NextImg:Mets finally win consecutive games again in series win over MLB-best Rays

Maybe Pete Alonso’s game-winning blast on Wednesday night did finally get the Mets going.

After that thrilling comeback win, the Mets followed it up Thursday with a 3-2 victory over the Rays, giving them their first back-to-back wins in nearly a month.

While there wasn’t much offense, the slumping Tommy Pham’s soft infield single in the sixth knocked in the winning run and Tylor Megill and the bullpen pitched well enough to the Mets to come away with the series win over first-place Tampa Bay and Cleveland coming in Friday.

The Rays got to Megill quickly, as Josh Lowe led off the game with a double and moved to third on an infield single by Randy Arozarena.

Lowe scored on a Harold Ramirez groundout, but Megill escaped further damage when Brandon Lowe grounded into a double play.

The Mets loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the inning with a Francisco Lindor walk, a single by Jeff McNeil and a walk to Alonso.

Lindor scored to tie the game on a Brett Baty groundout before Pham whiffed to end the inning.

Alonso gave the Mets the lead with a mammoth 446-foot blast to center to start the bottom of the fourth.

It was his MLB-leading 16th homer of the season and his third in as many games.

Meanwhile, Megill didn’t allow a hit after Arozarena’s infield single in the first until Josh Lowe matched Alonso with a two-out solo shot to center to tie the game at 2-2.

With two on and two out, backup catcher Michael Perez caught Ramirez off first to end the inning.

Megill allowed just two runs in a season-high six innings.

The Mets threatened in the bottom of the inning, with runners on the corners with one out after singles by McNeil and Baty against right-hander Zack Littell.

Pham gave the Mets a 3-2 lead with a dribbler that went for a hit.

But Vogelbach struck out and Escobar flied out to keep it a one-run game.

Brooks Raley pitched a scoreless seventh and then gave up a leadoff pinch-hit single to Wander Franco in the eighth.

Jeff Brigham entered and got Christian Bethancourt to pop out and Manuel Margot to hit into a double play.

David Robertson closed it for the save, pitching around a one-out double by Arozarena, as the Mets won consecutive games for the first time since beating the Giants twice straight on April 20-21 in San Francisco.
