NextImg:Mets end Dylan Bundy experiment after sticky-stuff ban

From the No. 4 overall pick in 2011 to serviceable MLB starter to “sticky stuff” in Triple-A Syracuse — and now Dylan Bundy’s baseball fall is complete.

The Mets released Bundy on Wednesday, following a disastrous season that included a ban for using a sticky substance during a May 17 game — his final appearance with the team.

Bundy, now 30, made his major league debut at just 19 years old with the Orioles, a rise that was matched by the likes of Chris Sale and Stephen Strasburg.

Bundy was ejected from the May 17 start after umpires checked for illegal substances at the end of the top half of the third inning.

His ejection puts an end to a disastrous season where minor-league hitters hit .426 against Bundy in the month of April.

His May was hardly better, carrying a 7.82 ERA in 12 2/3 innings during his final month as a member of the Mets organization.

Manager Buck Showalter had some hopes for Bundy to make it as a reclamation project during spring training.

“He’s a pro,” Showalter said. “A lot of people would tell you he was the best high school prospect they ever saw.

Now he goes back to the drawing board looking for answers on what has been a career marred by injuries and unfulfilled promises.

His 2012 season showed plenty of promise as a rookie throwing 100 mph with regularity, but then the right-hander needed Tommy John Surgery a year later.

Until 2020, his career was a story of injuries and frustration as his electric stuff began to wane.

His first year with the Angels in 2020 proved he still had something left with his 3.29 ERA, but he hasn’t been a major league quality starter since.

He never pitched with the big-league Mets despite after signing a one-year minor-league contract with the franchise this offseason.
