The Mets received rare first-inning productivity Sunday with three runs, but Daniel Vogelbach’s sloppiness on the bases destroyed their chances of further denting the Rockies.
Vogelbach got nailed for the third out retreating to second base on Luis Guillorme’s RBI single, negating a second run that would have scored on the hit, as Brett Baty raced toward the plate. Kris Bryant’s throw behind Vogelbach caught the Mets’ designated hitter off guard.
“I wasn’t trying to make an out on the bases, especially when you have got a guy on the ropes like that,” Vogelbach said after the Mets’ 13-6 loss at Citi Field. “I regretted it all game. I watched it over and over again. Just kind of a freak [play].”
Vogelbach said he came off second base thinking the throw was going to the plate. The extra jump would have put him in a better position to advance if there was a bad throw.
“Kris made kind of a heads-up play,” Vogelbach said. “I barely came off the bag and by the time I looked up I couldn’t get back. … I want to win more than anybody and that is just a play, I messed up. We were having good at-bats, we had a guy on the ropes and you look back and if I don’t make that play who knows where the game goes.”
The Mets had scored six runs combined in the first inning in their previous 34 games.
Starling Marte was on the bench for a day off as he battles a .174/.208/.174 stretch to begin the month. Buck Showalter said he spoke with Marte before the game to ask if there were any issues affecting him physically. Marte missed time on the Mets’ West Coast trip last month with a sore neck.
“You give him a lot of chances to grab an excuse and he wanted no part of it,” Showalter said. “He said, ‘I have been through this before,’ and having some trouble finding his rhythm and tempo to hitting. … This is a guy that played with a broken finger last year. This is a tough man and he’s a lot more emotional than people might think. He cares. It means a lot to him. There is a lot there beneath the surface.”
Carlos Carrasco, who has been battling sickness, threw before the game, but has not been scheduled yet for a minor league rehab start in his return from right elbow swelling caused by a bone chip. Showalter indicated the delay in getting Carrasco into a minor league game could mean he will need two starts before rejoining the club.
Brooks Raley will pitch in a minor league game Wednesday, according to Showalter, and the Mets are hopeful he will return from the injured list this weekend. The lefty reliever is returning from elbow inflammation.
Bartolo Colon threw out the ceremonial first pitch on the seventh anniversary of his improbable home run for the Mets.
