Seven innings of quiet bats. A furious eighth-inning rally. A bullpen meltdown. The star saving the day.
Game 1 of the Mets’ Monday season-ending doubleheader had it all, and it was Francisco Lindor hitting a go-ahead two-run home run in the ninth to clinch their spot in the 2024 MLB playoffs with an 8-7 win.
After the Mets scored six runs in the eighth to take a 6-3 lead, Phil Maton and Edwin Diaz blew it in the bottom half, with Ozzie Albies’ bases-clearing double off Diaz giving Atlanta the lead.
But Lindor, dealing with a balky back after carrying the team for months, delivered the biggest hit of his Mets tenure.
The Mets can now save Luis Severino, who was due to pitch Game 2 on Monday, for the playoffs while Atlanta needs a win to claim the final wild-card spot.
Trailing 3-0 entering the eighth, the Mets went on a furious rally that started with a Tyrone Taylor double, which finally chased Braves starter Spencer Schwellenbach from the game after he shut down the Mets all afternoon. Francisco Alvarez followed with his own double off Joe Jimenez to finally get the Mets on the board.
After Starling Marte’s single put runners on first and third, Francisco Lindor’s RBI single cut the Mets’ deficit to one.
Jose Iglesias tied the game off of Braves closer Raisel Iglesias with an RBI single to right, and Mark Vientos followed with a sacrifice fly to give the Mets the lead.
Brandon Nimmo followed with a two-run blast to right off of Iglesias to put the Mets up 6-3.
