NextImg:Mets broadcast suffers technical issues due to extreme heat in Houston

Houston, we have a problem.

Those may have been the words uttered inside the SNY production truck during Wednesday’s broadcast of the Mets game against the Astros as the telecast faced a number of issues throughout the day.

Likely due to extreme temperatures in Houston — which reached triple digits Wednesday — the broadcast experienced technical difficulties, prompting play-by-play voice Gary Cohen to issue an apology to loyal viewers sitting through the game.

“We would like to apologize for some of the technical difficulties that we’ve been suffering through today. You know it’s 100-plus [degrees] in Houston and sometimes equipment does not cooperate,” Cohen said.

And almost on cue, the screen turned almost all red — save for the scoreboard and SNY logo — for a brief moment.

Cohen couldn’t help but laugh as he realized what had just happened during the eighth-inning apology.

“You saw the red, it came up red on my screen,” Cohen said.

The SNY feed turned red during the eighth inning on Wednesday.

“Red means hot,” analyst Keith Hernandez joked.

“That’s the theme of the day,” Cohen said before turning his focus back to the action on the field.

The SNY broadcast team has had to deal with its fair share of unique situations this season while on the road, and at least the technical glitches didn’t force the crew to call the game from an obstructed view.

Earlier this season, Cohen and Ron Darling were forced to call a Mets game in Oakland from an auxiliary booth due to the pungent odor of a loose possum inside the visitor’s television booth.

The SNY feed turned red during the eighth inning on Wednesday.

Francisco Lindor was at the plate as the glitches took place.

“[SNY’s tech crew] walk in the booth and were immediately met by the stench of the possum having, you know, done his business in the booth,” Cohen said during the April broadcast. “Apparently, the booth reeked so badly of possum leavings that an executive decision was made to move us to this booth, which is somewhat smaller and has a few impediments, like there’s a pole right in front of me.”

The Mets dropped Wednesday’s game against the Astros, 10-8, and Houston took the three-game set at Minute Maid Park.

It was the Mets’ fourth loss in their last six games.
