The Phoenix Mercury’s start to the season might have already felt like it was stuck in second gear.
An incident with one of their players and their car on Wednesday may have only solidified that.
Guard Sophie Cunningham took to Instagram on Wednesday to detail what had happened to her in the early morning hours after the team returned from a loss in Seattle to the Storm that dropped the Mercury’s record to 4-6.
As it turned out, Cunningham had her car towed, and she had to go pick it up, according to her, in an unidentified middle-of-nowhere Arizona town.
“If you’re wondering where I’m at, got in at like 2 [a.m.], went to bed at like 2:45 last night, yeah I got my freaking car towed,” she said on her Instagram Story. “So I’m in the middle of bumf–k nowhere in I don’t even know what part of Arizona. So if this is the last time you guys see me, it’s been fun.”
However, the trip was not all for naught, as Cunningham, 27, did say she saw a number of motorcycles and dirt bikes that piqued her interest enough to consider making a future purchase.
“I might have to come and get me one of those because they’re pretty nice to be honest,” she added before saying that pink and orange writing was on the windshield of her car, which she hoped would be removed.
All seemed well in the end, though, as on her next story she posted a video inside the car, though there did appear to still be some writing on the windshield and a piece of caution tape latched onto a windshield wiper.
Cunningham, in her sixth year in the WNBA, is averaging 9.1 points per game with 5.1 rebounds, which rank fourth and second on the Mercury, respectively.
The No. 3 vote-getter for Most Improved Player in 2022 will try to help the Mercury rise in the standings, as they sit in eighth place in the Western Conference and have already endured a four-game losing streak.
