The first trailer for MEGADOC is finally here, and it’s giving film fans an unfiltered look at Francis Ford Coppola’s decades-long quest to bring his passion project Megalopolis to life.

Directed by Mike Figgis, the fly-on-the-wall documentary has already been described as a modern-day Hearts of Darkness — capturing not just the sheer scope of Coppola’s self-financed, $120 million sci-fi epic, but also the chaos, creativity, and vulnerability behind it.

The footage teases Coppola, now 85, at his most daring, guiding Adam Driver, Aubrey Plaza, and Shia LaBeouf through unconventional rehearsals that swing between playful improvisation and intense emotional work.

“Filmmaking is play,” Coppola says at one point — a mantra that defines both the documentary and the sprawling, unpredictable energy of Megalopolis.

Fans also get glimpses of the massive sets, thousands of extras, and political allegories baked into Coppola’s long-simmering vision of “New Rome,” a futuristic reimagining of New York City. The result? A documentary as much about artistic obsession and personal legacy as it is about filmmaking.

MEGADOC premiered earlier this month at the Venice and Telluride Film Festivals and hits select theaters September 19, distributed by Utopia.

Whether you’re a Coppola devotee or just love the mess and magic of moviemaking, this is one behind-the-scenes ride you’ll want to take.
