There’s no need to go to the Rockaways this weekend to get your fill of sharks, because Meg 2: The Trench is releasing on digital platforms like Amazon Prime on Friday, August 25, aka tomorrow. Surprise!
Warner Bros. announced the Meg 2: The Trench digital release date on Thursday afternoon, along with the movie’s DVD release date on October 24. Perhaps some moviegoers will be surprised to hear that this big shark movie is coming to digital just three weeks after The Meg 2 opened in theaters, on August 4. After all, the movie has made a solid $320 million at the worldwide box office so far. It’s not mind-blowing, but it’s certainly not a bomb.
But this is fairly par for the course these days for Warner Bros., the studio that distributed Meg 2. The studio’s big superhero films, Shazam 2 and The Flash, were both pushed to digital after about four weeks in theaters. Even Barbie, one of the most financially and critically successful WB film in years, is reportedly coming to digital platforms on September 5, after about a month and a half in theaters.
Still, three weeks is a pretty quick turnaround for this monster movie! Directed by Ben Wheatley, this sequel to 2018’s The Meg delivers an even bigger, chonkier “Megalodon” monster, aka the extinct species of shark that used to roam the oceans. Jason Statham reprises his role as Jonas Taylor, a rescue diver tasked with saving humanity from the terrors of the sea. But this time around, there may be something lurking in the deep that’s even more dangerous than the Meg.
Here’s how you can watch Meg 2: The Trench online, and when to expect Meg 2: The Trench streaming on Max.
Beginning on Friday, August 25, Meg 2: The Trench will be available to buy and rent digitally on Amazon Prime, Google Play, Apple TV, Vudu, and more. The price may vary depending on which platform you use to purchase the film, but on Amazon Prime the movie costs $24.99 to pre-order for purchase. You will also be able to rent the film for a 48-hour viewing window at the suggested price point of $19.99. (Though, again, this price may vary by platform.)
Meg 2: The Trench will also be available to buy on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on October 24.
Meg 2: The Trench will likely be on Max before the end of the year, because it is a Warner Bros. movie, and Max is the streaming service owned by Warner Bros. All of the new WB theatrical movies end up streaming on Max, though the wait period has varied by title. The Flash, for example, will begin streaming on Max tomorrow, about 10 weeks after it opened in theaters. If Meg 2: The Trench follows a similar release strategy, you can expect to see it on Max around mid-October 2024.
However, it’s possible the studio may hold the Max release of The Meg 2 until after the movie comes out on DVD on October 24. Either way, we can expect to see Meg 2 on Max before the end of the year.
That said, this is all speculation. If you want to watch the big shark movie right away, you can buy or rent the movie online tomorrow.
