LAS VEGAS — Mecole Hardman still can’t quite figure out what happened with the Jets.
The wide receiver is preparing to play in Super Bowl 2024 with the Chiefs on Sunday.
But his 2023 season began as a member of the Jets.
The team signed him to a $4 million contract last offseason, but then barely used him before trading him to the Chiefs in October.
“It was a roller coaster,” Hardman said of his time with the Jets. “Things definitely didn’t go like I wanted it to go. I guess I just wasn’t on the same page with everybody.
“There’s no bad blood over there. I’m happy for everybody over there. I’m still cool with some of those guys. I wish them the best. I think things happened like it was supposed to.”
The Jets talked about having big plans for Hardman in their offense, but he played just 28 snaps in five games and was inactive for one game before being traded.
“It was a little bit confusing,” Hardman said. “I just really didn’t know what was the thing. Obviously, they probably saw something different than I saw.”
Hardman said he just was not on the same page as the coaching staff, including offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett.
“I don’t know if he didn’t know how to use me, in a sense, or just felt like he didn’t need to,” Hardman said. “I don’t know what their thinking was when it came to me and having me on the field or not. There were plays where I could have gone into the game. Was it called? Not really. I think Hackett is a great guy. When it came to me, I don’t know what the thought process was.”
The Jets sent Hardman back to Kansas City, where he had spent the previous four seasons, in October along with a 2025 seventh-round pick in exchange for a 2025 sixth-round pick.
Hardman had two fumbles in the Chiefs’ divisional-round win over the Bills and played only one snap against the Ravens in the AFC title game.

He may not have a large role in the Super Bowl.
As for the Jets, Hardman thinks they have a good, young nucleus.
“They’ve got a great two-piece with Garrett [Wilson] and Breece [Hall],” Hardman said. “Breece is definitely a top-five running back in the league. He came back from the ACL, and to do what he did is pretty good. Garrett’s one of the best receivers.
“He’s the most athletic, freakish receiver I’ve ever been around — how he can twerk his body, just stop and his catching ability. They have one of the best defenses in the league. I think with Aaron [Rodgers] coming back, and hopefully they get some pieces in the offseason, I think they can be really good.”
