House Speaker Kevin McCarthy declared Monday that he will not support lying Long Island Rep. George Santos’ bid for re-election following his indictment last month on fraud charges.
McCarthy (R-Calif.), laughed when asked by Fox News host Brian Kilmeade if he is “a part” of the embattled New York Republican’s re-election campaign.
“No, I am not. He shouldn’t run for re-election,” the House speaker declared.
Santos, 34, has pleaded not guilty to 13 criminal counts, including embezzling $50,000 in campaign money for personal expenses, misrepresenting himself to donors, lying to Congress about his income and cheating to obtain COVID unemployment funds.
The freshman representative from New York’s 3rd Congressional District was released on a $500,000 bond – posted by his father and aunt – following an initial hearing.
McCarthy on Monday vowed that Santos’ seat – which the Cook Political Report rates as “lean Democrat” – would remain in GOP hands after the 2024 election.
“We’re going to keep that seat with another Republican,” the House speaker told Fox News.
In a Twitter post on Monday, Santos indicated that McCarthy’s comments would not affect his decision to seek a second term in Congress.
“Dear Media, I plan on continuing to serve the people of NY3. Providing excellent constituent services to the people of NY03 and proposing common sense conservative legislation for the betterment of our nation. Speaker McCarthy’s comments do not change my intention of running,” he wrote.
Santos, who is also under investigation by the House Ethics Committee, stepped down from two House committees in January, but has refused calls, including from fellow members of New York’s GOP congressional delegation, to resign from office.
Kellen Curry, an Afghanistan war veteran and former vice president at JPMorgan, filed paperwork in April to challenge Santos for the 2024 GOP nomination.
