Call Me Kat star Mayim Bialik revealed that she and the rest of her castmates were “waiting” for Leslie Jordan on set of the FOX sitcom when they learned of his sudden passing last October.

Bialik opened up about the heartbreaking moment the Call Me Kat “family” found out about the 67-year-old’s tragic death — which was caused by sudden cardiac dysfunction after crashing his car — on today’s episode of The Jennifer Hudson Show.

“It was a sudden thing. We were all at work and waiting for him to show up at work, so it was very, very, very complicated to have the whole crew there and the whole cast,” Bialik recalled.

She added that the whole cast was a “family,” noting that they were one of the first shows back after the lockdown, so they became “this little COVID unit.”

“We were all very close, and people knew Leslie Jordan as Leslie Jordan, not necessarily just as the character he played on our show,” she said. “He’s been in people’s lives, especially during COVID.”

Bialik continued, “He was in people’s Instagram feeds. A lot of people really formed a real connection with him, and he loved that. He loved being approachable. He loved being loved.”

With Jordan passing while the third season of Call Me Kat was filming, Bialik dished on why the show decided to send his character to Tahiti with his new husband.

“When he passed, we kind of all — it’s rare to find a group of people so unanimous about something so quickly — and we all just said, ‘We want him to live forever,’” she told the audience.

She added, “It’s been hard and we’re grateful to have gotten the opportunity to work with him the way we did in the time in his life that we got to work with him.”

The Jennifer Hudson Show airs on weekdays at 11 a.m. ET on FOX. Check out the full clip above.
