MaXXXine—the highly anticipated final film in Ti West’s slasher trilogy—is coming to digital platforms tomorrow, after less than one month in theaters. As it turns out, Mia Goth is neither safe from murders, nor is she safe from the new reality of the movie industry!
Written and directed by West, MaXXXine is the third film in the Goth-led horror trilogy, following 2022’s X and Pearl. In the film series, Goth stars both as a young, ’70s porn actress named Maxine Minx, and as a disturbed older woman named Pearl. While Pearl was a prequel to X, MaXXXine will serve as a direct sequel to X, and follows Maxine in the 1980s, when she moves back to LA following the horrific events of the first film.
MaXXXine was the highest-grossing film of the franchise—making $18.9 million at the worldwide box office—but pushing movies to a digital release for a “premium” price, after a month or so in theaters, has become the new Hollywood norm. That said, if you’re not willing to pay the “premium” on-demand fee to watch MaXXXine at home, we do expect MaXXXine to stream free on Max eventually. Beginning on Friday, August 2, at 12 a.m. Eastern Time (which is also 9 p.m. Pacific Time on Thursday, August 1) you will be able to buy a digital copy of MaXXXine on platforms like Amazon Prime, Vudu, Apple TV, and more. The price may vary depending on which platform you use to buy the film, but on Amazon, the film cost $24.99 to pre-order a digital copy. MaXXXine will not yet be available to rent online.
The MaXXXine digital release date was revealed by the Amazon Prime landing page for the movie, which says that the movie’s digital release date is August 1, 2024 at 9 p.m. PDT.
MaXXXine is not currently available to stream on any subscription-based services, but the film will eventually be coming to streaming, on Max, thanks to the recent 2023 deal between A24 and Warner Bros. Discovery, which brings A24’s previous and upcoming theatrical releases to the streaming service Max.
The MaXXXine streaming release date on Max has not yet been announced, but we can make an educated guess as to when you can expect to see MaXXXine on Max. The A24 deal is a “Pay-1 deal,” which means A24 movies will start streaming on Max in the “Pay 1 window,” meaning that Max will be the first “TV channel” to pay for the rights to MaXXXine, after the film has been released on digital and home media.
The time period for this window, following the movie’s release in theaters, has shortened drastically in the last few years and varies by title. One recent A24 title, Love Lies Bleeding, began streaming on Max, about four-and-a-half months after its release in theaters, and about three months after its release on digital. If MaXXXine follows a similar release strategy, you’ll see it on Max around November 2024.
That said, this A24 and Max deal is still new, and the release times have varied by title. If you want to watch MaXXXine online right away, you can buy or rent the film on digital platforms beginning tomorrow.
