Two years after the University of Alabama’s high-stakes sorority recruitment became a social media phenomenon, Max has unveiled its first trailer of Bama Rush, a documentary that peels back the curtain on the cut-throat tradition.
Filming in the summer of 2022, Bama Rush follows four young women as they prepare to rush at the University of Alabama. According to the logline, the documentary “explores the emotional complexities and high-stakes of belonging in this crucial window into womanhood.”
In the trailer, one student admits that they wouldn’t be at the university if rush didn’t “blow up” on TikTok. In 2021, the viral trend captivated viewers around the world with young women posting their various “Get Ready With Me” videos and updates on whether they made it to the next round.
One voiceover in the trailer says, “It’s way more dramatic than you’re thinking it is,” while another adds, “Being in a sorority will help me figure out the person that I want to be because I feel like I don’t really know who I am.”
Experts also weigh in on the cultural impact of sororities, with one telling cameras, “There are a lot of things that you’re entitled to when you’re in a top-tier sorority.” Shortly after, a student clarifies that “the rankings come from fraternity boys, so the top house has the hottest girls.”
The documentary appears to touch on heavier topics, with one girl opening up about her eating disorder and another revealing that she moved out of her house at 16 years old following the death of her father.
Meanwhile, another source discusses the “undercurrent of racism” within the long-held tradition at the school, before a student of color adds, “The culture at Alabama is fucking weird.”
The teaser also gives insight into the roadblocks that stood in the way of making the documentary, with many urging sorority prospects not to participate.
“Not to be dramatic but this documentary could be the end of Greek life as we know it,” one interviewee ominously says.
Bama Rush will release on May 23 on Max.
