NextImg:Max Stirs Up Controversy After Referring to Writers and Directors as “Creators” on New Streaming Platform

More On:

Max

The transition from HBO Max to Max has come with a few technical glitches, but the fact that millions of users’ data migrated from one streaming platform to another over the course of one day marked a relatively successful launch for Warner Bros. Discovery.

But there has been one curious change from HBO Max to Max that’s less of a glitch and more of a conscious decision from those responsible for programming the new platform. When viewing a show or film’s “Details” section, rather than listing out individual credits — such as writer, director, or producer — the platform has lumped all of those jobs together under the label “Creators.”

One of the first people to point out the change was a Twitter user named John Frankensteiner, who wrote, “The new HBO Max (MAX) has eliminated writer/director credits in their interface in favor of a vague ‘Creators.'”

Including a screenshot of “what Raging Bull currently looks like” on the streamer, Frankensteiner added, “It’s so fucking over.”

Frankensteiner and others pointed out that not only has Max done away with individual credits, but they also appear in no particular order. Considering that we’re currently in the midst of a writer’s strike that’s the result of Hollywood writers demanding fair pay as an acknowledgement of their work from most of the major streaming platforms like Netflix and Max, the choice not to specify the credits feels pointed.

Unless of course the glitch is the result of an AI program, which would truly be *food creator’s kiss.*

Some users are even question the legality of the change, given that writers, directors and producers are all members of unions which specify how their members must be credited for their work.

The change appears across every title on the platform, as far as we can tell.

Decider has reached out to Max for comment about the change, but did not hear back by time of publication.
