PITTSBURGH — It didn’t take long for Matthew Schaefer to get on the scoreboard.
The 18-year-old became the youngest player in history to record an NHL point in his debut just 12:02 into the Islanders’ opener Thursday night, feeding Jonathan Drouin for the Islanders’ first goal of the season.
The assist from the left-side boards came after Schaefer wheeled into the zone on an entry, showcasing the speed and skating ability that helped propel him into the No. 1 overall spot of June’s draft.
It was never in much doubt that Schaefer would make the Islanders out of training camp, but his debut marked a major milestone, with his friends and family coming out in droves to PPG Paints Arena to watch.
Schaefer, who was partnered with Scott Mayfield on the third pair, didn’t have much trouble early in the game, looking very much like he belonged on NHL ice.

Schaefer was the Islanders’ first No. 1 overall pick since John Tavares in 2009.
Tavares also got on the scoreboard in his debut, putting up a goal and an assist, coincidentally also against the Penguins.
