The Packers dropped to 2-2 on Thursday night after a 34-20 loss to the Lions, and Green Bay head coach Matt LaFleur had a not-so-rosy assessment of his team’s play.
When asked about why the team struggled particularly in the first half fell down 27-3, LaFleur was quick and to the point.
Though, he was none too pleased about the reporter asking the question in the first place.
“We got our ass kicked,” the head coach said. “If I knew, it wouldn’t have happened. … That’s a BS question, man.”
The team played particularly poorly in the first two quarters of the game, picking up just one yard in the entire first quarter while getting out-gained 284-21 in the first half.
“I don’t think anybody’s feeling sorry for us,” LaFleur said. “So, we’ve got to get better. We’ve got to look at what we’re asking our guys to do. Everything wasn’t good enough, so, the plan wasn’t good enough.
“That was humiliating, being down 27-3 or whatever it was at half.”
Though the Packers did mount a few scoring drives in the second half, including one aided by a missed call by the officials, they were no match for the Lions, who are now in first place in the NFC North at 3-1.
Without left tackle David Bakhtiari, who was placed on injured reserve before the proceedings, the Packers struggled to contain the Detroit pass rush, which sacked quarterback Jordan Love five times.
And, on the ground, Green Bay was held to a paltry 27 rushing yards on 12 carries.
“Any time you go out there and you can’t effectively run the football and conversely can’t stop the run, that’s a recipe for losing football,” LaFleur said. “And that’s what happened tonight. And give Detroit credit. We knew they were a tough opponent, but they manhandled us, really in every phase.”
Green Bay next takes on the Raiders in Week 5 on “Monday Night Football.”
