NextImg:Matt Barnes threatened to ‘slap the s–t’ out of me during game: Student basketball announcer

Former NBA forward Matt Barnes is facing criticism over the way he conducted himself at a high school basketball game over the weekend.

Barnes was in attendance for the Friday night game between the Harvard-Westlake Wolverines and the Crespi Carmelite Celts, which his son plays for, when he appeared to jaw at the refs and allegedly attempted to intimidate a student broadcaster.

The Celts are coached by former Knicks coach Derek Fisher.

The Los Angeles Times briefly mentioned the incident in a story about the game, but since Saturday new details have started to surface about what happened.

Harvard-Westlake broadcaster Jake Lancer said on air during the broadcast that Barnes “kind of came up and put his hands on me actually.”

The clip that was posted Saturday night showed Lancer sounding rattled as they came out of a break while the camera showed the game having to be paused and the former NBAer on the court being talked to by an unknown group of people.

Lancer added that he was “fine.”

The high school student later told freelance sports writer Jack Pollon that Barnes had been going onto the court “multiple times” to yell at the officials, and when the two made eye contact is when he approached Lancer.

“He said ‘what do you think your looking at and I said ‘you’re screaming you’re a (term for a female private part)’ to the refs mid game while im trying to announce, don’t touch me’ and then he said ‘I’ll slap the s–t out of you, [sic]’” Lancer told Pollen.

Another video posted to X – which was captioned “Student told Matt Barnes to “shut up” – clearly showed Barnes with his hands on Lancer talking closely to the student.

Two adults are then seen coming into the frame to intervene in the situation.

“I want to make it very clear that I never told him to ‘shut up’ or anything close to that, he came up to me,” Lancer wrote on X about the situation. “All I wanted to do in the moment was get back to announcing the championship game.”

The chaos appeared to begin when Barnes’ son didn’t get a foul call to go his way with 2:32 left in the third quarter.

The non-call enraged the Crespi fans and sent Barnes, who spent 14 seasons in the NBA, into a rage with the officials.

Barnes did respond to a user on X, who had called him out for his actions at the game, saying that he was only talking to the refs.

“Shut ur ass up,” Barnes replied. “I was talking to the ref not you or that kid that decided to say some slick s–t. Don’t let that privileged HW s–t go to your head. Idgaf who your son is.”

That has been Barnes’ only comment on the Friday incident.
